Whether you're a seasoned pro, or just enjoy a couple of frames after some pints, CUPC has got you covered!
The club originally formed to govern all things pool related across the University - we run the college leagues and several singles tournaments throughout the year. Outside the university, we have University teams competing in the local leagues, BUCS, and of course the annual Varsity Match against Oxford.
More recently, we've expanded into snooker too, with an annual snooker tournament, and teams competing in BUCS and Varsity.
If you're interested, just register on this site and get playing! There are no membership fees, so no excuses not to!
If cueing's what you like doing, join our Facebook group!
Hope everyone has had a good start to the term!

Varsity Pool and Snooker 2023
This year's home Varsity Pool and Snooker matches will take place on Sunday 21st May at WTs Sports Bar, starting at 10am. The pool team of 12 will be selected by captain Krish Verma, and the snooker team of 8 by myself. Competition for places will be fierce, so get your practice in! Players can feature in both the pool and snooker teams, and eligibility is obviously only for current students.
(This date is slightly closer to the start of exams than we would have liked, but venue constraints made it impossible to hold any earlier unfortunately.)
Old Boys 2023
Our annual Old Boys alumni event will take place the following Sunday 28th May at WTs. This event is free, and open to all current students and alumni, offering a chance to catch up with old club members over a game of pool. We generally run a casual competition on the day, and players of all abilities, past and present, are welcome.
Round-up of university team results this year:
For the second year running we won both the pool and snooker Varsity matches by scorelines of 58-32 and 40-24 respectively.
We also secured promotion from Division 3 in each of the local pool and snooker leagues, achieving back-to-back pool promotions and improving upon a near-miss last year in the snooker.
In inter-university competitions, we had a 'nearly' year. We finished runners up in both East of England pool and in the trophy of BUCS snooker, losing a black-ball shootout in the pool against Essex and a three-frame decider against Ulster in the snooker.
Our B and C teams also performed strongly at East of England pool, with the C-team taking a famous victory over the B-team in the semi-final on the way to winning the trophy.
In the individuals component of the event, Konstantyn Bichai won the trophy, and Henry Phillips reached the semi-finals of the championship.
Finally, we again entered the snooker Midlands Cup, but were beaten in the quarter-final by the hosts, a strong Warwick team who would go on to win the BUCS snooker championship later in the year.
A round-up of results from this year's singles tournaments:
Novices Pool: Winner Leo Varga-Elmiyeh Runner Up Curtis Ho
Novices Snooker: Winner Nasir Macadam Runner Up Yichi Zhang

Round-up of university team results this year:
The highlight of the year was doing the double in Oxford, winning both Varsity pool and snooker convincingly. The pool result was 48-42 and the snooker finished 21-11.
We also won Division 4 of the local pool league, with Connor Powell winning a very impressive 20 frames from 24.
http://capl.pool-stats.com/default/viewtdivisiontable/239
We finished 3rd in Division 3 of the local snooker league, narrowly missing out on promotion by 8 frames over the course of the season. Next year's our year!
http://www.leaguesnooker.co.uk/league/online-snooker.asp?DivisionID=2135&seasonid=931&leagueid=50
In university events, we got to the final of the East of England Pool Championships, held at Cambridge Snooker Centre in December, losing to Essex in the final. Connor Powell reached the semi-finals of the singles tournament.
We also sent a team to the snooker Midlands Cup for the first time, though unfortunately we were unable to get a team together to compete in either the BUCS pool or snooker championships this year.
A round-up of results from last year's singles tournaments:

Well done to Michael Hutcheon for winning the Pool Novices' Tournament! He fought back from behind to beat Dhruv Nanavati.
Also, congratulations to Andre Chan, Snooker Novices Champion 2017-8! He held off the brave challenge of Luke Dunsmore in a tense final.
A round-up of results from last year's singles tournaments:
- Back at the start of Michaelmas the CUPC Novices' Pool was won by Henry Phillips. The snooker was won by Brett Noden.
- The CUPC University Cup, which had longer format matches from the beginning, was won by Alex Fisher, with runner-up Krish Chana.
- The Pool Challonge tournament, surely our biggest ever singles tournament with 64 competitors, was won by Thomas Brouwer, beating Nick Hope in the final.
https://challonge.com/poolknockout
- Andrew Derrett won the Snooker Challonge, deafeating Alex Fisher in the final in an epic 4-3 victory that went down to the final black.
https://challonge.com/snookerknockout
- Alex Fisher won the CU Masters, beating Henry Phillips in the final 3-2.
- Alex Fisher was also on form in the CU Open, but was beaten in the final 5-0 by Daniel Kent.

The 2016-17 college leagues have now started!
Captains: During a match, note the crsids of the players involved in each frame. To upload a result, you'll need to log in to the website using the link at the top right-hand corner of the page. Then, when you go to the page for your division, you should see a menu under the fixtures list where you can select the match you played, and enter the result of each frame.
Good luck to all 33 teams!
The CUPC Open will take place this Sunday at 1:30pm (you can practice from 1pm). It is only £5 to enter and all of that goes into the prize pool. This tournament normally sees plenty of upsets, with last year all of the players in the university team getting knocked out before the final.
Our AGM will be at 6pm on Thursday 11th at the Hopbine pub. All are welcome to come along and raise any matters they'd like discussing on the state of pool and snooker in Cambridge - or drink, chat, eat burgers, or any combination of the above ;)
In particular we'll be voting in the committee for next year. Positions available are:
> President
> Men's Captain
> Men's 9-ball Captain (maybe, if someone would like to fill it)
> B-team Captain
> Women's Captain
> Junior Treasurer
> League Secretary
> Snooker Captain
You can get information on the duties involved with the various positions by clicking on "Information" above, then "CUPC Constitution". But you're also very welcome to email the incumbent committee member (look for "CUPC Committee details" on that page) (or, if there isn't one, Kris is probably the best person to ask) and ask them about what the role is like.
If you'd like to stand for any of these roles, just drop a message to the President or turn up to the AGM with a few words and a keen look on your face.
If you've got anything you'd like us to discuss but can't make it to the meeting, just email the relevant person and we'll happily raise it.
So we're at the end of another year. Congratulations to Peterhouse 1 for becoming this year's league champions! A deserved result after the dominance their college showed. Congratulations also to Fitz 1 for winning the second tier and earning a place in next year's Division 1.
Thanks so much to every team and every player who took part in this year's leagues, I hope you enjoyed it. A particularly big thank you to the captains for their hard work and effort that went into getting so many games organised. Good luck in 2015-6!
Congratulations to Trinity Hall 1! Setting a disapponting league season behind them, they produced a superb cup run and ultimately triumphed 5-3 over St. Edmund's 1 in the final to win Cuppers 2015!
See the full tournament bracket on the Cuppers sheet here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VdPjCYVhyyeJvY80RkZL3o1nHA1tzcCaR85g1NkKLWg/edit#gid=2068962964
After polling the team captains and players, the decision has been made to move back to the old college league structure (divisions 1/2a/2b/3a/3b) for the 2015-6 season. Thanks to everyone for bearing with us while we tried out some new experimental structures, sadly they haven't worked out.
I have updated the division pages with the new "prizes" for Divisions 2-5. With regards to the "seeding for lower tiers": higher seeds will be kept apart as much as possible (by splitting them between Divisions 2a/2b). Also, Divisions 2a and 2b will fill up (say, with the highest 16 seeds, perhaps), and lower seeds will be placed in the third tier. (Exact division sizes for the second and third tiers are decided once we know how many teams are signed up for a particular year.)
Congratulations Phil Durkin, winning Saturday's Snooker Tournament without the loss of a frame!
Round 1 of this year's college leagues is complete, and my my, didn't Peterhouse do well! Congratulations to them for landing all three of their first-tier teams in the top two of their groups, thereby taking up half the spots in Division 1 - a quite remarkable achievement.
Joining them are Hughes Hall 1, Robinson 1 and Trinity 1. One of these six teams will be crowned 2015 league champions when Round 2 finishes on Saturday 25th April.
Links to the league tables can now be found on the College Leagues page of the website. Good luck to all teams!

11th February: - Deadline for first round of cuppers.
15th February: - CUPC Masters at the CSC starting at 14:00.

This year, the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals will all be held at the Cambridge Snooker Centre in early Easter term. For the preceding rounds, the deadlines are
Round of 32: Wednesday 11th February (end of week 4)
Round of 16: Friday 13th March (end of term)
Good luck to all 26 teams!
A big congratulations to Zhihao Cui on winning this year's CU Open!
This year's CUPC Open will take place at 2pm on Sunday 30th November at the Cambridge Snooker Centre with entry of £5.
With most of the best players from last year no longer around, the tournament should be wide open. First round games will at least be first to three and there will be a plate competition, so everyone will be guaranteed at least two games of pool.
The top half of the draw will be seeded on the ladder rankings. So if you want an easier draw, climb the ladder.
The college leagues are underway once more!
Group tables and fixture lists can be found by following the link to your group here. (The original googledoc can also be found here, but where deadlines disagree, the website fixtures have precedence)
And the new rules are here
Captains: During a match, note the crsids of the players involved in each frame. To upload a result, you'll need to log in to the website using the link at the top right-hand corner of the page. Then, when you go to the page for your group, you should see a menu under the fixtures list where you can select the match you played, and enter the result of each frame.
Good luck to all 37 teams!
Our annual Novices Tournament is on Sunday 26 October starting at 2pm. A great way to get started on your road to pool stardom - or just to come and unwind at the weekend with some free frames.
Open to any student who hasn't played for Uni A in CAPL, in Masters or in Varsity.
Entry is free; cues can be borrowed from CSC.
The Cambridge Snooker Centre (CSC) on Coldham's Road is about a 20 minute walk from the town centre. Some uni players will be walking from the edge of Parker's Piece, next to Kelsey Kerridge, at 1.30pm. Alternatively, you could come to the taxi rank in front of Christ's at 1.40pm where we will arrange a taxi share.
See you there!
Thank you to those of you who responded to the poll about the new college league structure. A summary of the results and the action we're taking can be read here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/18bGKX2xL_uAtM_VaBq7Mwrn_N5qIVqcxcbY5bJcQklE/edit?usp=sharing
Registration is now open for the 2014-5 college leagues! You have until the end of 29 October to register.
To register a team, you will need to send £20 by cash or cheque to Miranda Stocks's pidgeonhole at Hughes Hall. Cheques should be made out to Cambridge University Pool Club.
Along with your £20 you should include a slip stating the team name and the name and CRSid of the captain (or write this info on the envelope).
You should make sure your team has money to pay for ten frames at each home match (up to 6) plus any home Cuppers matches (up to 3). You are welcome to play your matches at any reasonable venue, although most teams choose their college table.
Phew...that's about as tense as a Finals Day can be. Congratulations to everyone who participated! There were no runaway winners and an awful lot of nail-biting 20-minute-plus epics - a day where a cool head and strong resolve was needed.
The headlines are: Christ's 1 are league champions, triumphing 8-7 over Robinson 1, and Robinson 1 defend the Cuppers title, beating Peterhouse 2 6-3 in the final.
There'll be a full report appearing sometime in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, there are a few photos somewhere on the right-hand side of your screen from our Twitter.
An additional congratulations to Tarun Manjunath, who won the singles tournament on Friday! A very tough route to the final, beating some top players and nearly always coming from behind, Tarun should be very happy with his mug...er, I mean cup. Yes, cup.
But champions are there to be conquered! Only five months until the 2014-5 season gets underway...I think you'd better get practising!
And, to round up our Finals Day (/Weekend) action going on this weekend, Tom Latimer will be facing off against Tarun Manjunath in the final of our first-ever online singles tournament. Good luck to both combatants, but who will take home the cup...?
See the full tournament bracket here!
The college leagues have now closed! Congratulations to Robinson 1 and Christ's 1 for winning Divisions 1a and 1b! We'll see them in the league final in Easter term to see who'll take home the trophy.
In Division 2a, Christ's 2 made it a clean sweep for their college, and success for the new mixed teams as Hughes/Clare won promotion as runners-up. Successful campaigns were also had by Peterhouse 3 and Wolfson 1 who won promotion from Division 2b.
The Cuppers semi-finals are also decided, and it'll be a busy Finals Day for Robinson 1 and Christ's 1 as they face off against Homerton 1 and Peterhouse 2 respectively!

There have also been a few updates to the league rules - mostly just clarifications, although the league final format is finally revealed: http://www.cupc.co.uk/college/leaguerules.php
Congratulations to Drew Miley for winning a hard fought CUPC Open. On a day when several "seeds" suffered crushing first round defeats, and promptly ran away home for early baths, it was top seed Drew and a rejuvenated Steve Herbert who were left slogging it out until the bitter end. Full report will no doubt follow soon...
The CU Open is next Sunday 24th Nov starting at 1pm. It's open to everyone, and there are cash prizes - more details here
The UPC 9-ball championships are coming up on the 5th-8th of December, and we're looking to fill at least one team of three to represent the uni. More details here
Get in touch ASAP if you're interested [email protected]
Congratulations to Yiannis Stylianidis on becoming our 2013 Novices' Champion, in a stunning performance which saw him lose only 3 frames over the course of the day! Congratulations also to Tom Pearson who was the worthy runner-up.
A full tournament report is available here.
The CUPC 2013 Novices Tournament will be Saturday 26th October at 2pm at the Cambridge Snooker Centre. The tournament is for all players who haven't played either in Varsity, in the CUPC Masters or for the Uni A CAPL team.
The tournament is FREE, and you will all get at least three matches (we'll have a group stage before the knock-out stage). Hope to see plenty of you there!
For getting to the Cambridge Snooker Centre, it is around a 25min walk from the centre of town, or a 10min cycle.

If you'd like to share a taxi to Cambridge Snooker Centre, there will be a group leaving from the taxi rank outside Christs' at 1.30 - please comment on the post on the facebook page or email if you're planning on joining them.
We are now accepting signups for the 2013-14 college leagues! Captains wishing to submit a team should send the fee of £20, by cash or cheque, to Tom Pearson at Robinson College, Cambridge, CB3 9AN. Please make any cheques out to CUPC, and include a paper slip (or write on the back of the envelope) with the captain's name and CRSid, and the team name.
(The actual structure of the league is as yet undecided, and will depend greatly on the number of entries we receive, but this much is true: no team will be unduly relegated from the tier they are currently qualified for.)
In addition, this year, we have a singles tournament happening throughout the year for ALL players. Good news - it's ready for signups! We're using a website called Challonge to run it, so make yourself an account, then sign up **before 4th November** at
http://challonge.com/cupcsingles2013
It's free to enter, but please see the note about paying for matches!
We are holding three FREE beginners pool teaching sessions on Wednesday 16th, Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd of October. All sessions will be the same, so please just pop along on the evening that is best for you. Sessions start at 6.30, at the University Social Club on Mill Lane. There will also be a snooker session immediately after the Tuesday session, starting at 7.30.
Each session will have two university players, and for half of the session you will be learning the basic "World" rules of 8-ball pool as played in the college leagues and by the university teams. For the other half, we will teach you the basics of a good cueing action, how to think about aiming, and the basic spin shots. These sessions are there to help you feel confident in going out and playing for your college teams and in our Novices Tournament (Sat 26th Oct - more details to follow soon) if you are new to 8-ball pool.
We look forward to meeting you there!
The second half of this year's AGM will be held on Monday 30th September at 7.30pm at the Hopbine pub (Fair street, near the Grafton Centre). It's free pool all night, and buy one get one free on burgers so there's no reason not to join us!

They will be joined next year by the champions of Division 2A and 2B, who this year were Homerton 1 and Pembroke 1- both of whom had a nervous time getting promoted, waiting on Magdalene 1 and Emma 1 in last-day results. Congratulations must also go to Trinity Hall 1, who defeated Homerton 1- looking for a back-to-back cup victories- in the final of cuppers 5-2 whilst Queens' 2 won the plate, with a 5-0 win over Trinity Grads. The deadline for entering new teams has passed. No more entries will be accepted.
All the captains that I am currently aware of have until WEDNESDAY 24th OCTOBER to
confirm they have read the league rules after which they will be fined points proportional to the number of days they have gone without doing so after the 24th.
Captains that are appointed later on to teams currently without a captain will have a deadline for this imposed starting from when I hear from them.
Entries are being taken for the new season.
Deadline for team registration is Wednesday 17th October.
To enter a team please send the captain's name and email address to [email protected].
League fees are £20 per team and cheques made payable to 'Cambridge University Pool Club' should be sent to Matt Cullen at Fitzwilliam College.
Deadline for paying league fees is Wednesday 24th October at which point teams that haven't paid will be removed from the league.
There are major changes and additions to the League Rules this year and all captains are required to read them. The league rules can be found at: http://www.srcf.ucam.org/cupc/college/leaguerules.php
Captains will be asked to send a confirmation email that they have read and understood the league rules prior to the season starting. Please note that this is a requisite of entering a team this year and is not optional.
