Cambridge 22 - 68 Oxford
The 2004 Varsity pool match was held at Colours pool and snooker club in Oxford, on 8th/9th May. Facing arguably the strongest OUPC side ever seen, an inexperienced Cambridge team succumbed to the heaviest ever Varsity defeat. Although the contest had been considerably closer the previous year, Cambridge's squad had been composed almost entirely of finalists, and this year had only one player remaining with Varsity experience - their captain, Rob Cork. Oxford on the other hand, were fielding a team packed full with players offering both the talent and experience that the Cambridge side lacked, and right from the start were taking no prisoners. Varsity matches are usually won or lost on the first singles session, and this one was no exception, with the scoreline standing at 8-28 going in to the doubles. Here, Oxford's knowledge of BAPTO rules, and their considerable experience, saw them win four of the six legs by a 3-0 margin, only conceding two doubles frames in the entire competition!
Cambridge returned on the second day needing all of the remaining frames (36) for victory; an unlikely prospect, and Oxford wasted no time in snatching two of the first three frames to seal their victory. From then on, the demoralised Cambridge side haemorrhaged frames at an alarming rate as Oxford piled on the pressure in search of a record victory. Despite the best efforts of the Cambridge middle order to rally, the scoreline finished a massive 68-22 to the dark blues, leaving Cambridge with all the work to do in order to rebuild in time for the next Varsity match.
