The first CU Open tournament was held on the 19th November 2005, at Cambridge Snooker Centre. The event was open to any current student at the university, and a total of 26 entries were received. Eight players were seeded based on position on the university singles ladder and their performances in ladder challenges, previous tournaments and matches.
The format for the tournament is straight knockout, and all matches will be played to World Rules.
The event was won by Rob Cork, who beat Patrick Snow 6-4 in the final to claim the title of CU Open Champion.
