Sunday, 18th November, saw the annual CUPC Novices tournament - a chance for any new or previously unseen players to win a trophy and make themselves noticed. The tournament, held at the Cambridge Snooker Centre, saw a field of five take part in a high-quality competition.
Congratulations go to James Rickards who overcame Kam Ting Tsoi in a tense rematch of a group-stage game that had finished as an easy 2-0 victory to Kam. This time, however, it was James who emerged the victor in a tense deciding frame!
Congratulations must go to him, his opponent in the final and to all those who took part. All five players being of the highest quality.
The two finalists, James and Kam. |
The top 4 novices from the group stage qualified for the semi-finals.
Before the semi-finals were contested, there had to be a one-frame play-off to decide the fourth semi-finalist, between James and Thomas, which James won.
The first round of the tournament had a group format. The players were put into a single group with two university players (marked 'Uni') before each player played two frames against every other player in their group.
The top four players in the group excluding the university players would progress through to the knockout stages. Should two players finish tied on frames won, the ordering would be decided by a one frame sudden-death play-off.
